The Seventeenth Judicial District, in conjunction with the Colorado Attorney General's Office, local law enforcement agencies, the Adams County Department of Social Services, the City and County of Broomfield Department of Health and Human Services, and other interested parties, have joined together to better coordinate services and develop policies or protocols to assist in the prevention of the abuse and exploitation of senior citizens. The Elder Abuse Committee of the Seventeenth Judicial District Family Violence Coordinating Council has developed a series of posters and other informational resources aimed at assisting this process. Additionally, the Elder Abuse Committee is endeavoring to better assist law enforcement, social service agencies, financial institutions and others identify and prevent the exploitation or abuse of the elderly. This page includes a listing of known resources and contacts for information regarding Elder Abuse issues. The resources and information contained on this page will be periodically updated to make certain that recent information or developments will be readily available to interested persons. Resources for Elder Citizens, Community Agencies and Policy Makers The Seventeenth Judicial District Elder Abuse Committee has developed a specialized page of links to studies, resources and agencies that advise seniors and develop policy to deal with issues related to the exploitation and abuse of the elderly. The Adult Protective Services Unit of the Adams County Department of Social Services receives and investigates reports of mistreatment, neglect and exploitation of at-risk adults, including senior citizens. The Adult Protective Unit can intervene to assist families or individuals in need of services to prevent further abuse, neglect or exploitation of persons to whom the unit is mandated to provide services. To report a suspected or known incident of abuse, neglect or exploitation of an at-risk adult, during regular business hours, 8:00 o'clock a.m. to 4:30 o'clock p.m., Monday through Friday, call (303) 227-2353. At all other hours of the day, weekends or holidays the Child Protective Services Unit takes all calls at (303) 412-5212. In an emergency call 911. Elder Abuse or Exploitation Prevention Educational Resources The following resources can be utilized to assist any interested person in learning about elder abuse or exploitation, its prevention and consumer alerts: This program is designed to train personnel of financial institutions to identify and prevent the financial exploitation of the elderly and at-risk adults. The program is patterned after successful programs in Oregon and Massachusetts. The Seventeenth Judicial District Family Violence Coordinating Council Elder Abuse Committee in collaboration with the Colorado Coalition for Elder Rights and Adult Protection has not only developed this training program, these two entities will assist in the training process. The Before the Money is Gone Manual can be viewed in Adobe Acrobat format. Office of the Colorado Attorney General. The Office of the Colorado Attorney General has a number of resources regarding consumer protection and alerts, senior citizen protection, and other related matters. AARP ElderWatch. The AARP Foundation in concert with the Office of the Colorado Attorney General, the Better Business Bureau, and the County Sheriffs of Colorado have developed the AARP ElderWatch program. This program is intended to stop financial abuse of older persons in the State of Colorado. Telephone numbers and links to other organizations and resources which may be of assistance to older citizens are included in this site. The AARP ElderWatch program has a toll free senior hotline assistance hotline which provides information and assistance to older people as well as caregivers. The AARP ElderWatch hotline number is 1-800-222-4444. Colorado Legal Services Elder Resources Web Page. The Colorado Legal Services has a comprehensive review of issues related to elder law issues at the organization's web site. The elder law link is the 60+ link on the site's home page. Included is information on advance medical directives, powers of attorney, elder abuse, retirement, guardianships, wills, estate, and probate, and nursing homes. Return to Top↑ Colorado Bar Association Senior Law Handbook. The Colorado Bar Association Senior Law Handbook is a comprehensive resource with information regarding all aspects of the law affecting the lives of senior citizens. The handbook contains information regarding government and financial assistance, Medicare and Medicaid, health insurance beyond Medicare, residential options, housing, medical advance directives, estate planning, fraud prevention and much more. Seventeenth Judicial District Family Violence Coordinating Council, Elder Abuse Committee. Implementing recommendations on model court practices developed by the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the Seventeenth Judicial District has developed a Family Violence Coordinating Council to better inter-agency practices in dealing with all issues related to family violence. Included in this council is an Elder Abuse Committee whose charge is to develop better cooperation, coordination and collaboration among agencies, public and private, who deal with issues involving seniors. The committee has developed informational documents and meets regularly to promote inter-agency communication in an attempt to increase the visibility of issues affecting older citizens in the judicial district. Periodically, the Elder Abuse Committee will post information on this site regarding its work. The Senior Hub. The Adams County Senior Hub is a non-profit organization which sponsors several community based programs including: Meals on Wheels; Respite Care and In-Home Supportive Services; Senior Solutions; RSVP; and Senior Rural Nutrition.
